Tourist Tips (How Not To Stand Out)

Found this article on how not to look like the typical clueless American tourist. Some of the tips are actually quite good and will help you blend or at the very least not stand out too much.

I have traveled to a few foreign countries and there are always a few dick head tourists that give Americans a bad name, so when it Rome at least respect the Roman culture. Check the loud and boisterous "I'm entitled because I am an American" BS at door because it makes us look bad and at the very worst could make you a target.

Be respectful and polite, the tip about learning few phrases like "please" and "thank you" in the native tongue make a lot of sense. It shows you respect the culture enough to make an attempt at it even if your accent or pronunciation is not 100% correct.

  1. My wife and I travel extensively. Once our kids reached 8 or 9, we started bringing them along as well. Kids don't have to behave like spoiled little bastards. If you raise them to act like responsible human beings, they will be. ButI digress........

The easiest way to spot Americans is their size. The ones that stand out are WAY fatter than the locals. If I see a couple wearing shorts and white sneakers waddling around, I'll invariably walk a little closer and....lo and behold, they'll be speaking English, American English. Now I'm not trying to be super-critical here, but it's embarrassing! Sure, many of us could stand to drop some pounds, but the level that a great percentage of Americans have let themselves go is staggering.

Caucasian Americans, present company included, share much of the same gene pool as our Euro counterparts, so if I hear any more about how people are meant to be that way I am going to vomit! The physical appearance of these blobs just confirms to them just what's become of us. We've become fat and lazy. The supersize mentality that we've developed in consumerism and entitlement has spread to our asses. We have a lot of work to do.

  2. Good point about size we are typically taller and MUCH fatter than most folks to be quite honest.
