Swine Flu, HYPE?

People are freaking out about this Swine Flu and it is dominating the blogs and the Internet, as well as the news...

Here is something to put it in perspective for you:

SEASONAL FLU KILLS 250,000 to 500,000 people worldwide PER YEAR. 9 of 10 are 65 or older.

36,000 die in the US of seasonal flu EVERY YEAR.

So take that for what it is worth. Me? I am not worried.

...that is all.

  1. But...but....but PIGS are involved! We're all going to die! Besides, it's obviously an al-qaeda plot to kill Americans....and Mexicans...and um...people in parts of Europe. But not a lot...just a few...just to keep us scared.

  3. Predictable but unfortunate, the first confirmed death is a 23 month old infant.

As with ANY flu the very old and the very young are most at risk. Most others with healthy immune systems should be able to fight this off.

  4. GREAT point! I wonder why the media hasn't reported this? I suspect it is the typical sensationalism that gets ratings. I'm guess a political agenda or two will emerge using this scare as well.

What is more dangerous about the Swine flu than other strains? Also, when IS the right time to panic? They say now is not the time. I honestly can't imagine a time when panic makes sense.

  5. Mo this is typical media coverage at its worst. They have people freaking out because it sells airtime and eyeballs, and it makes a good story.
